ORGANIZED: The Huxford Genealogical Society (HGS) was organized in Homerville, Georgia on November 26, 1972 as a non-profit organization. BACKGROUND PURPOSE: Its purpose is to collect, preserve and publish the genealogical information of the Wiregrass area in South Georgia and North Florida. Donations from members and friends have helped to expand the coverage to much of the Eastern United States. The Society currently has 1200+ members that makes the HGS one of the largest in Georgia. NON-PROFIT: The HGS is a non-profit, tax exempt corporation chartered by the Georgia Secretary of State. All gifts and contributions to the Society are tax deductible under IRS Revenue Code 501 (C) (3). SOCIETY MEETINGS: The HGS meets on the second Sunday in February, August and November and the third Sunday in May at 2:00 PM, in the Huxford Library in Homerville (Homerville Municipal Complex) (map). MEETING MINUTES: The Meeting Minutes of each meeting are published in the Huxford Genealogical Society Magazine in the issue following the quarterly meeting. DUES: Membership for a household is $30.00 per year (Membership Application). The Huxford Genealogical Quarterly Magazine alone is $25.00 (for libraries only). The Quarterly Magazine is published in March, June, September and December. Single copies of the magazine are $10.00 each or four (4) for $30.00; plus applicable sales tax for Georgia residents plus $5.00 shipping and handling. Please Join us for a future meeting of the HGS! BACKGROUND On November 26, 1972, Judge Folks Huxford called together a group of interested friends for the purpose of forming a genealogical society. Judge Huxford was 78 years old and had recently retired after serving for a number of years as Clerk of the Superior Court of Clinch County, Georgia. This meting was held in Judge Huxford's guest house, then known as the Beasley house, in Homerville, Georgia and the response was overwhelming. Twenty-nine people were at this initial meeting. Because of his advancing years and failing eyesight, Judge Huxford wanted to make provisions for the preservation and use of his personal collection of genealogical materials which were the result of a lifetime spent abstracting names, dates, and places of obscure people whose memory, except for his persistence, would have otherwise vanished into oblivion. His research covered Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and North Florida.
