HOURS: Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Through the efforts of former Society Board Member, Roscoe A. Stallings, of Nashville, Georgia, the Clinch County Board of Education offered the Society the use of two large classrooms at the old high school and the offer was accepted with much gratitude by the Society. Since that time the City of Homerville acquired the school building and completely renovated it. The Huxford Society was then granted the use of four rooms in the other wing of the building and the Society had those rooms renovated. As a result the Society had a much larger area for the library and a place to hold meetings. However, with the additions to the Huxford collection via donations, more space is still needed. The genealogical collection of the Huxford Library consists of a basic book collection with emphasis on the eastern United States and includes a microfilm and CD collection of the United States Census schedules, with an emphasis on the southeast. The book collection contains state and local histories, lineage books of several patriotic societies (DAR, DAC & Colonial Dames), self help books telling how to search, marriage and death records, cemetery records, tax lists, ship passengers, Quaker records, military and pension records, and many family histories. Also included are varying issues of genealogical periodicals. The Huxford Library serves as the depository for the life-long genealogical collection of the late Judge Folks Huxford, F.A.S.G.; including his card files, notebooks, correspondence, old newspapers, other papers which he acquired throughout his busy life, and varied reports which he had collected as a storehouse of treasured family and local history. The Huxford Library currently has 4,000 plus genealogical and reference books, and 1,300 family surname files. An extensive collection of microfilm, microfiche and CD-ROM reference material is available for viewing. Donations of personal collections from members and friends of the library have expanded coverage to much of the eastern United States. The HGS Library Research Guide Books (Book I and Book II) are available for purchase. These two guide books provide you with a detailed listing of the genealogical research materials available at the HGS Library.
The Library Staff does not perform your actual research; the patron of the Huxford Library is expected to come to the library to use the resource tools available and compile and organize their own materials. The Huxford Genealogical Society and Library features:
Homerville is rolling out the red carpet for members of the Huxford Genealogical Society. Starting in 2008, the Helmstead Bed and Breakfast proprietress, Ms Jane Helms has graciously discounted the costs of her lodging for members of the Huxford Genealogical Society. This discount placed the price of her B & B on a par with and in some cases lower that the choice motels / hotels of Valdosta and Waycross. The Helmstead is a large two story mansion located at 931 Fargo Highway with four bedrooms and all of the amenities, such as internet access, in-house computer, telephone, pool, etc. Contact Ms Helm at 912-487-222 or 912-487-6197 and email helmstead@aol.com. Several Huxford members have taken advantage of this fantastic offer and have enjoyed this wonderful southern hospitality over the past year. Now in 2009, Homerville’s other Bed & Breakfast proprietor, Mr. J. Brian Brown, President and CEO, has graciously indicated that he will allow our membership the same privileges at his "Inn on Virginia," located 130 Virginia Avenue (across the street from the Homerville Exchange Club). The Inn is a large two story mansion with four bedrooms, two downstairs and two upstairs with full amenities included. Mr. Brown indicates Huxford Members are to contact ‘Tracy’ at 912-487-5500 or email jbrianbrown@wilsoniga.com for more information and for reservations. Fees for both of the Homerville B&Bs are $60.00 (sixty dollars) per night single or double occupancy. This rate includes 7% state sales tax and a free full breakfast or an enhanced continental breakfast (the guest chooses which they wish) each morning of occupancy. The Huxford Officers and Board of Directors thank these two fine hosts for their gracious contributions on behalf of the members of the Huxford Society.
