BOOKS AND SOURCE MATERIAL GENEALOGICAL BOOKS The Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia volumes are an absolute must for anyone doing family research in the Wiregrass region of southern Georgia and northern Florida. The seven original volumes (1 thru 7) by Folks Huxford and the five recent volumes (8 thru 12) published by the HGS contain over 5,000 sketches of Wiregrass Georgia Pioneers born prior to 1880. Each book is fully indexed and includes both male and female names. Every volume contains additions and corrections to the previous volumes. Volumes 9, 10, 11 and 12 contain pictures of many of these old pioneers and their families. The ancestral sketches in these volumes are a biographical account of many of the early settlers of that portion of Wiregrass Georgia, embraced in the original counties of Appling, Camden, Glynn, Irwin and Wayne. This region is now composed of Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Berrien, Brantley, Brooks, Camden, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, Colquitt, Cook, Echols, Glynn, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Lanier, Lowndes, Pierce, Thomas, Tift, Ware, Wayne and Worth counties. The biographical and genealogical sketches in the Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia volumes (and the HGS Quarterly Magazine) include the surnames listed via the following links: Books for Sale via

the Wiregrass, Volume 1
Volume 1 of Pioneers of the Wiregrass begins a new series of books and is an expansion of Judge Huxford’s original seven volumes of Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia and the Huxford Genealogical Society’s publication of volumes eight through twelve. The original twelve volumes cover the wiregrass area of Georgia and the adjacent counties in Florida. They also include the ancestors of pioneer settlers of the coverage area who lived in other regions of the country. Over the years, there have been many requests to expand the geographical area covered in the books. After twelve volumes, the board of directors of the Huxford Genealogical Society felt that the time had come to respond to these requests and include the Wiregrass counties of South Alabama and Northwest Florida. This volume has some pioneers who lived in the expansion areas and later volumes will include even more. There are a few sketches that are re-prints of ones printed in Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, usually with substantial additional information.

Tattnall
County, Georgia, Loose Papers, Abstracted by
Sabina J. Murray, and Compiled by Huxford Genealogical Society
Tattnall County was created in 1801 by the State Legislature although immigration into this area of Georgia began as early as 1784 when Washington County was formed. For the first 20 years of its existence, Tattnall County was a frontier county. When the Creeks ceded the territory that would become Appling, Irwin and Early Counties, large numbers of Tattnall County families relocated further south, taking advantage of the Georgia Land Lottery opportunities in those areas. Many other families continued on through Georgia to settle in Florida and the other Gulf states, as those areas were also opened up for settlement. As a result of this mass migration, there are very few long-time families in those parts of the South who cannot trace one or more of their ancestors to a family who once lived in Tattnall County. The loose papers in this book date from the first year of Tattnall County's creation and continue well into the 19th century. While this volume only contains these records through 1845, the second volume will be printed, that will continue them through 1870. In general, these loose papers consist of civil and criminal court citations, indictments and sentences; Grand Jury charges; arrest warrants; witness examinations; depositions; appearance bonds; bastardy bonds; fidelity bonds; adultery charges; divorce decrees; and so on. They identify all kinds of county court officers, among them lawyers, judges, justices of the peace, inferior court justices, grand jurors, petit jurors, sheriffs, their deputies, constables, and witnesses. In all, thousands of names are mentioned, as the extensive index so clearly reveals. Even the names of persons and officials from neighboring counties, such as Screven, Montgomery and Bulloch Counties, appear in the records. These abstracts were copied directly from the original documents contained in boxes in the Tattnall County Courthouse attic. It should be pointed out that they have never been photocopied nor have they been reproduced on microfilm or microfiche. Therefore, the only way to read these documents, other than in this book, is to go to the Courthouse, where it is difficult to locate the records or even gain access to them. Hence, the dire need for this book. Price -

Clan MacNachtan: Published by Paulk Genealogy and Research (1998) Compiled by Jessie H. and Delma Wilson Paulk
I (Jessie Paulk) became involved with the publication of this book because of my research on the HENDRY family of Taylor County, Florida and for my project and eventual publication of the Survey of Taylor County, Florida Cemeteries. Also, several of my research projects have led me to several HENDRY connections and ties to various other families that I was researching; i.e., McCall, Pate and Clements. Several serious family researchers of the HENDRY family were gracious enough to send me their entire family collection of data, including photographs to be included and merged with what I had to make this book possible. The HENDRY genealogy in this works starts with John Hendry from Arran, Scotland and his son, Robert Hendry, born March 17, 1752 in Island of Arran, Scotland, died August 31, 1830 in Liberty County, Georgia. This is a hard cover book, with 847 pages, a full name index, and many family photographs as well as the background concerning the surname HENDRY and the connection to the Scottish Clan, MacNaughton (progenitor - Nachtan Mor from the 10th century). Today, the 618 square miles that comprises Clay County is almost unchanged since its creation in 1858. Situated in northeast Florida, it is bounded on the north by the parent county, Duval. The historic St. Johns River forms its eastern boundary, and it is limited on the west by the counties of Baker, Bradford, and Alachua. To the south it abuts Putnam county to which it returned a small portion of land (Melrose area) in 1859. This works includes a comprehensive survey of the Clay County cemeteries with the location, and description of each plus the tombstone information for each burial (plus additional information when known).
