Details
There is a super schedule lined up for the ADOL on March 28, 2009.
the Program will be held in the Homerville Exchange Club Building in Homerville,
Georgia. Registration will be from 8-9 A.M. and speakers will begin at
9:00 A.M.
Excellent instructors have been lined up for this day.
The first is Mrs. Susan Sloan. Susan holds a B.S.
degree in Psychology and a Master of Education degree, both from Georgia State
University. She is a member of the Georgia Professional Genealogists, the
Association of Professional Genealogists, and several state and local
genealogical societies and lineage societies including the Huxford Genealogical
Society. She serves on the Board of the Georgia Genealogy Society and on the
Advisory Committee for the R. J. Taylor, Jr. Foundation that provides funding
for books useful to Georgia genealogists. She is currently serving as
President of the Georgia Chapter of the Assoction Of Professional Genealogists.
Susan will be lecturing on two subjects, first is the
Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) which is the current standard used by the
D.A.R. and S.A.R. as well as all National and State Genealogical Societies. She
will be using a book published by Ms. Christine Rose recognized by these groups.
Books will be available for use by the attendees for a small donation of $10 to
the Seminar. This GPS is used and recognized as a proof of lineage whenever
positive proof is not available. A must for all genealogists.
Susan will also be lecturing on "Pre-1850 Census Records."
A course in how to find those elusive ancestors hiding in these censuses.
The second speaker will be Dan Crumpton who will be
speaking on "Research in Original Georgia Land Patents." Dan is a retired
forester. Through his career of appraising, surveying and managing tree farms,
he developed an interest in researching original Georgia Land Patents and Plats.
He has, in many cases, located those plats on modern topographic maps. To
do this, he has used sources from Georgia and South Carolina courthouses,
private collections, libraries, the Georgia Surveyor General’s Office and the
Georgia Archives. Mr. Crumpton has found many old plats contain
information not recorded in the deeds for that property. He is the author
of three books on Warren Co., two on Jefferson Co., and one on Richmond Co.,
Georgia. He has recently researched heavily Burke Co., where he
began surveying in 1957. He is also working on Screven Co. for which he
has copied more than 2,000 Screven Co. plats.
Mr. Crumpton has a surname searchable website,
www.crumptonplats.com where a scanned copy of the plat can be
ordered for a small fee. Sites that can be searched are Burke, Columbia,
Screven, Richmond, and Washington. He plans to add Glascock, Hancock, Jefferson,
Jenkins, McDuffie, Richmond, Taliaferro, Warren, and Wilkes in the near future.
Our final speaker has not been confirmed as yet but will either be
speaking on "Native American Research" or "Book Publishing for the Novice."
We request that you register as soon as possible in order that we can
ascertain how many books to order for the GPS portion of the day.
Books are not included in the registration fee.

GENETIC GENEALOGY CONFERENCE
Saturday, January 24, 2009
At the
Homerville Municipal Complex Auditorium
Homerville, Georgia
The Huxford Genealogical Society is planning
to host a one day GENETIC GENEALOGY Conference on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at
the Homerville Municipal Complex. Therefore, there will be no planned seminar
for the 4th quarter of 2008.
This Conference will be your ideal opportunity to learn
more about the process of obtaining a DNA test, what results can be expected,
and actually taking a genetic swab (no needles or blood are required for a
genetic genealogy test).
DNA kits will be available for purchase during the
conference and assistance will be provided to complete the DNA swab. Kits
will also be available if you need one or more kits for other family members who
are not in attendance. The descriptions of the tests available, and the
prices for a test kit and the test are listed on the Huxford Web site. The
prices available to Huxford / Wiregrass Georgia DNA Project participants are
substantially lower than retail.

The Huxford Webmaster and resident DNA project manager,
Robert B. Noles, is working with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), the first, largest and
most trusted genealogical genetic testing company in the world, to set up this
Conference. The founder and president of Family Tree DNA, Mr. Bennett
Greenspan, will be the main speaker.

The Conference will be open to anyone who wishes to attend
and will not be limited to the Huxford Membership; however, members will be
given the first opportunity to register for this event. After this initial
announcement, registration will be on a first come basis. So, call the
Library today at 912-487-2310 to register for this important conference.
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn about how genetic testing is being
used with great success for genealogical research.
Registration for the Conference should be made as soon as
possible, but no later than the December 31st, 2008 for registration.
You can read about genetic genealogy on the Huxford Web site at:

answers to all the genetic testing questions you didn't know
to ask
and review Haplogroup test results (so far) by surname for
the Wiregrass Georgia Regional DNA Project at:

Cost of Conference: $20 for Huxford Society
Members; $25 for non members
Door Prizes: Genealogy reference books, a free
test kit and testing, plus two free one year memberships in the Huxford
Genealogical Society.
If you already know you want to obtain a genetic genealogy
test, you are encouraged to order your test now, so that you will have test
results available before the Conference. You will be in a much better position
to ask questions and understand the presentations at the Conference, if you
already have your test results in hand. Bring your four or five generation
pedigree chart (any format will do) and test results with you for a one-on-one
discussion with one of the experts in the afternoon session of this conference.
Better yet, join the Huxford / Wiregrass Georgia Regional DNA Project via FTDNA
and send your pedigree chart to
Robert B. Noles, before the Conference. There is no cost to join the
Wiregrass Georgia Project if you already have results from another FTDNA
Project.
You can order a genetic test on-line via the following
link or pick up an application for a test at the Huxford Library:

Remember, your descendants 50 to 100 years from now will
have your birth certificate, marriage license, death certificate, census
entries, deeds, and your genealogy reports, but they will very disappointed if
they don’t find your DNA test results.
